Saga of Ashtabula train disaster endures after 140 years (photos, videos) | cleveland.com
“The mangled, bleeding bodies writhed in the terrible tortures around them. Some died with prayer and some with shriekings of woe on their lips.” A train carrying physicians, medical supplies and blankets was dispatched from Cleveland to the scene. In those days, “traveling by train was a dangerous proposition, and there were many wrecks, and lots of wrecks in Ohio,” Turzillo said. “They’re each bad in their own way, but of course this one (Ashtabula) ranks right up there as one of the worst in the nation.” There were also heroes in the disaster, according to Len Brown, of Canton, who has been raising funds and studying the bridge collapse for the past five years to film a documentary: “Engineering Tragedy: The Ashtabula Train Disaster.” Engineering Tragedy: The Ashtabula Train Disaster Brown cited Charles B. Leek , the nation’s first black telegraph operator, who stayed at his post in the Ashtabula railroad depot for 50 hours without a break, sending out news of the disaster, appeals for aid, and handling inquiries from anxious families. There were several investigations following the disaster, including one by a special committee of the Ohio legislature, where Charles Collins, chief engineer for the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern (LM&MS) Railroad testified. Collins, whose responsibilities included inspecting the bridge and assuring its safety, had been at the site of the accident and reportedly broke down and wept uncontrollably.Whenever any of us delve into greater depth, study this amazing website on the O scale trains, http://harlandqahd.bravesites.com/entries/general/the-growing-challenges-in-picking-details-for-athearn-trains; truth be told, there is indeed lots of truly helpful O scale trains advice to be found as you can plainly see.
